Sydney boasts a unique food culture, and is renowned for the diverse, multicultural cuisine on offer. As a visitor to Sydney, you’ll be treated to culinary feasts whether you eat seafood, contemporary, Asian or other internationally inspired food options.
If you’re after fresh produce, relaxed street cafes, takeaway options or fine dining there is a Sydney food experience to suit all tastes and budgets. There are however, a few quintessential Sydney dining experiences that are popular with both visitors and Sydneysiders.
- Doyles. Australia’s first seafood restaurant – Doyles – continues to serve Australians and tourists alike some of Sydney’s best seafood. Located on the shores of beautiful Watsons Bay with panoramic views over Sydney Harbour, Doyles serves lunch and dinner and is an iconic Sydney restaurant. Next to the Doyles restaurant at Watsons Bay is Doyles on the Wharf where customers can pick up takeaway seafood. There is also Doyles at Sydney Fish Markets – a restaurant and takeaway outlet at the site of Sydney’s freshest seafood.
- Harry’s Cafe de Wheels. Situated in Woolloomooloo, Harry’s Cafe de Wheels is essentially a pie cart that has become an iconic attraction and a Sydney institution. The cart gained popularity in the Depression years when ‘Harry’ opened up a caravan café selling pies (usually with peas or mash) near the front gates of the Woolloomooloo naval dockyard. It then became part of the Sydney nightlife, and today remains popular and a “must see” on the list of visiting celebrities. If you’re in Sydney, make sure you pop by Harry’s Cafe de Wheels and grab their signature dish the ‘Tiger’ – a chunky beef pie served with mushy peas, mash & gravy.
- Icebergs. Perched on the cliffs above world famous Bondi Beach, Icebergs bistro and bar is the perfect place to grab a meal or a drink with one of the best views going around. With two bars and a bistro above a sparkling swimming pool built into the Bondi rocks, you’ll get stunning views of Sydney’s most famous beach.
- Cafe Sydney. Cafe Sydney is perfect for those looking for a special and upmarket dining experience. Popular with corporate clientele and visitors wanting to treat themselves to a meal at one of the most celebrated centrepieces of Sydney dining, Cafe Sydney serves up contemporary Australian cuisine. There’s also an extensive bar and cocktail menu.
- Yum Cha. Yum cha is a Chinese dining experience that is more popular in Sydney than in other Australian cities. At yum cha, diners choose from a large variety of small servings of Chinese dishes (such as dim sum), that are served from trolleys that move between the diners’ tables. It’s a unique dining experience! There are a number of yum cha restaurants located within and around the city.
If you’re a ‘foodie’, then get excited about your trip to Sydney! As soon as you hop off flights to Sydney, there is an unparalleled culinary experience awaiting you! As well as restaurants, there are also a number of pubs and cafes serving up quality and affordable food.
