What it takes to get a job today.

In a good economy it can be challenging enough to set yourself apart from other job candidates as you make your case to an employer why you should be hired. In today’s challenging economic times finding work can be daunting — just getting an interview requires much effort. You can, however, gain an edge over other candidates by carefully planning and putting in place a winning strategy. The following five tips and tricks are designed to help you make a difference and get the job that you want.

1. Assemble your information — Knowledge is power and acquiring information will help put you in a position to one-up the competition. When interviewing, employers expect that you will know more than basic information about that company. Fortunately, most any information is easy to acquire simply by googling for it. Go to the company’s website and read each of the key pages including the main page, about, news and more. Find articles about the business online too, article written by news services, competitors and pundits.

2. Get there on time — Arriving late to an interview, even just a few minutes late, can ruin your chances of finding work claims Peter Post writing for The Boston Globe. Traffic, bad weather and missed directions can make you late. Map out your route and plan to arrive at least 20 minutes in advance, allowing for possible delays. If you arrive more than 10 minutes early, wait in your car, but get to the office five to 10 minutes ahead of schedule. If you’re unsure of the route to take, take a “dry run” a day or two in advance.

3. Listen carefully and ask questions — A job interview is not a monologue — it is a dialogue. The person interviewing you will start off talking and then will ask you some questions. At some point, you’ll be given the chance to answer questions yourself. On the first interview, you’ll want to avoid asking questions related to salary and benefits. Instead, focus on the job description and ask about the details of the job. Seek clarification about specific points you don’t understand. Demonstrate interest and offer solutions to problems.

4. Presentation matters — If you’re very nervous, that will show. Compose yourself, breath deeply, answering every question carefully and with much thought. Part of your uncertainty may involve how you feel about yourself. You can allay some of your fears by choosing the right clothes to fit the job interview, a suit that makes you feel good about yourself and helps you project self-confidence. “Dressing for success” goes beyond clothing — cover up tattoos, limit your piercings to a pair of earrings, don’t chew gum, avoid wearing perfume or cologne in excess and trim your nails advises Dr. Randall S. Hansen of Quintessential Careers.

5. Thanks and follow up — Once your interview is over you need to plan your next step. And that step should be to send out a thank you note. How important are thank you notes? A Career Builder survey shared by AOL Jobs noted that 22 percent of surveyed hiring managers are less likely to hire a candidate that does not send a thank you note. Send a thank you note by email or postal mail, and then follow up one week later with a call to the company to reiterate your interest in the position.

Will these tips and tricks land you a job? There is no guarantee that they will, but the odds of you getting hired over another potential employee of equal merit increases with each step. You need every advantage possible today — why not put together a winning strategy for job-finding success?

By Andy Lambada

Traveling all over the globe is one of the greatest desires for any individual. Touring provides people with a chance to know more about other areas, people, societies and cultures. However, traveling can also be exhausting and it has its own dangers too.

You must be aware that life is full of unexpected incidents and these troubles can take place while on the road. Thus, travel insurance is essential for any traveler, whether he intends to take a trip within or outside of his country. Normally, travel insurance covers personal mishap, death, medical expenditures, delay or loss of checked belongings, loss of passport and third party accountability.

The Need

There are mainly two reasons behind traveling – business or pleasure. Obviously, you wouldn’t want to spoil your important business meeting or your precious holiday. No matter how best your arrangement is, there’s always a possibility of some unpredicted incident. Fateful occurrences such as passport loss, loss of baggage, a medical urgency or an accident may effect you. Travel insurance can guard you against all such dangers as it protects you while you are in an unfamiliar or distant place you, helping your navigate through your crisis.

Every year, millions of people go on vacation and come back without any mishap. For a number of them, returning accident-free might make them feel that their indemnity policies were a needless expenditure. Thus, some travelers choose to opt out of an insurance policy. However, there are several dangers of traveling without travel insurance.

Increased Threats

The possibility that travelers have an accident while abroad has considerably increased. The reason is that people feel comfortable and let their guard down. They may also get involved in activities they wouldn’t generally participate in while at home. Simple things like using the swimming pool, beach volleyball, rock pooling, and go-carting might not seem to be very dangerous. However, each year travelers from around the globe are involved in accidents while taking part in recreational activities.

Dangerous Areas

Usually while traveling, people feel safe, their guard is down since they are on vacation and are expecting to have fun. In most cases they travel without any awareness of potential perils. Invariably, people do not retain the same awareness while traveling to new places as they might do at home. Nevertheless, such travelers become crime victims abroad. While some individuals are victims of minor theft, others fall prey to much more terrible circumstances such as strong-armed robbery, sexual exploitation and even murder.

Although you may not need to be overly cautious when on vacation, you must make sure that you’re adequately insured. Travel insurance may not just save you thousands of dollars, but it also can provide you with complete peace of mind.

That’s especially the case when it comes to traveling. As security at airports has increased and the price of travel has dropped, overall customer service has declined. Whether you’re a frequent business traveler or just someone planning a family vacation, here are some helpful web sites and apps that can make your experience go as smoothly as possible.

Kayak.com

While Kayak doesn’t sell plane tickets directly, its web site and app allow you to search for available flights across every major airline. There are a number of options you can use to filter searches, with direct links to airline web sites so you can easily book your flight. There isn’t an easier way to book a flight at the cheapest price possible.

SeatGuru.com

One of the challenges of booking a plane ticket online is that you’re not sure what you’re getting until you board the plane. If you need extra leg room or easy access to a bathroom, this web site will help you pick the perfect seat. Seat Guru provides seat information on every domestic flight, with suggestions on the best seats, areas of the plane that are most comfortable and recommendations on the best place to sit if you need an electrical outlet. It’s free and extremely easy to use. All you need is a flight number or airline and plane number.

TripIt.com

Once you book your flight, forward the flight info to this web site and it will compile into an easy to read format that you can access on your smart phone. Trip It can insert your flight info into your calendar and it allows you to easily update any changes without wasting a lot of time typing and entering info.

Airline Apps

Every major domestic airline has an app you can use to check in and print your boarding pass. Some are better than others, with Delta having perhaps the best of the lot. If you have a smart phone, Delta’s app will create a digital boarding pass you can use at scanners and TSA checkpoints. It also provides an easy way to upgrade your seat and when integrated with your frequent flier number, it can offer you special deals that are otherwise unavailable.

FlightTrack Pro

While this app costs $10, it’ll easy pay for itself during your first trip using it. This software provides instantly updated information on every aspect of your flight from boarding gate number to flight info and seating updates. It also easily integrates with TripIt, giving you access to more information than you’d have if you worked for most airlines. You can follow every aspect of your trip, and because of the amount of information available, you’ll often know about problems before anyone else.

FlightAware.com

If someone is picking you up at the airport, this is the web site they’ll want to use. It provides instantly updated flight info, complete with a plane icon that show precisely where the airplane is at any point in the flight. It’s the easiest way to know exactly when a plane will arrive at the airport.

Aircraft mechanics “diagnose, adjust, repair, or overhaul aircraft engines and assemblies, such as hydraulic and pneumatic systems,” according to O*Net OnLine. Such mechanics possess at least a high school diploma with most also having an associate degree or a certificate of training from an FAA-approved training program. Aircraft mechanics received an average salary of $52,810 annually as of 2009 and can still find opportunities with FAA repair shops, at regional carriers and with generation aviation providers including business aviation.

Duties

Maintaining today’s aircraft requires mechanics to be properly trained on managing complex machinery. Aircraft technicians may specialize in preventative maintenance while others may concentrate on repair work. An airframe mechanic works on most of the aircraft except for engines and instruments while powerplant mechanics work on engines. For mechanics trained to do both, they’re called A&P mechanics. In comparison, avionics technicians work with electronics such as radar, radio and navigation.

Aircraft Mechanic Salary

As of May 2010, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that aircraft mechanics and service technicians earned a mean annual wage of $53,280. Aircraft technicians in the 10th percentile average $33,630 per year while those in the 25th percentile earn an average of $43,660 annually. Salaries for those in the 50th, 75th and 90th percentiles were $53,420, $62,280 and $72,250, respectively.

Avionics Technician Salary

BLS data reveals that avionics technicians earned a mean annual wage of $52,050 as of May 2010. For those technicians in the 10th percentile, they averaged $36,810 and those found in the 25th percentile average $44,670 per year. For aircraft mechanics in the 50th and 75th percentiles, the average annual salary was $52,320 and $59,910, respectively. A top average annual salary of $67,560 was realized by those who were in the 90th percentile.

Top Industries

Aircraft mechanics and avionics technicians can find work in a variety of industries. Scheduled air transportation, support services for air transportation, aerospace product and parts manufacturing and the federal executive branch are among the largest employers. Aircraft mechanics can find top pay in companies providing courier service, averaging $78,380 per year. One of the top industries for employing avionics technicians is scheduled airlines, offering an average annual salary of $56,270, and some of the highest salaries in the industry. About 30 percent of all aircraft mechanics and avionics technicians are union represented.

Top Paying States

Aircraft technicians seeking good paying work can find these in Tennessee where such technicians average $68,180 per year, the highest rate in the nation. Average salaries in Indiana are $60,940, followed by Kentucky at $60,250 and Connecticut and New Jersey, averaging $60,050 and $59,890 annually. For avionics technicians, top pay can be found in Hawaii where such individuals average $62,260 per year. New York and Connecticut follow, with average salaries of $59,870 and $58,250. Pennsylvania and Massachusetts round out the top five best paying states, with salaries averaging $56,610 and $56,530, respectively.

Outlook

The BLS notes that job opportunities through 2018 will come as technicians retire and must be replaced. Anticipated growth for the decade ending 2018 is 7 percent with greater demand for aircraft technicians than for avionics technicians. However, avionics technicians trained to work with complex aircraft systems should be in demand and will have the best prospects for finding work.

By Ryan Rayburn

You probably know already that being fit is very important in our lives. Your level of fitness is the single most important factor in determining your quality of life as well as your lifespan here on earth. This explains why the fitness industry is a multi-billion dollar industry. There are countless personalities out there peddling all sorts of weight loss and fitness products such as books, CDs and DVDs. Of course, not all are worth your time and money, but each shares a message: it is important to be fit if you want to enjoy life to the fullest.

If you have tried following a fitness plan in the past but failed to stick with it, then you are not alone. Many people have strayed from the fitness path, but it is not too late for you to make a return.

Motivation

A portable trampoline can keep you in shape while traveling.

It is easy to start following a fitness plan. After all, the initial stages are always filled with excitement. When you are starting on a fitness plan, you are still high as you consider the possible results from your new endeavor. Don’t make the mistake of thinking though that the feeling of excitement will last. Sooner or later you will dread going to the gym and you will hate your diet.

This is where motivation comes in and why it is important to ground your fitness plan on things that are really important such as health. You may be motivated to stay in good health until you grow old rather than merely having six pack abs. Whatever works for you, use that as motivation.

No Time for Exercise

The most common reason for not exercising is not having enough time for working out, but any fitness expert will tell you that this is not a valid reason. If you really want to become fit, you will make time for exercise. If you are a morning person, then one of the things that you can do is simply to wake up earlier than usual and use the extra time for workout. If you are a night person, then what you can do is to workout at night instead of just drinking with your buddies.

There are also exercise routines that literally just takes minutes. One of the best examples of these is rebounding. Only a few minutes on a rebounder will give you a full body cardio and muscle toning workout. To get the most from rebounding though, you need to get a good mini trampoline such as a Needak rebounder.

Fitness is something that you should never neglect because your health depends on it. To say that you don’t have time for fitness is like saying that you don’t have time for life. Develop a fitness plan now!

The National Business Aviation Association is backing a petition to oppose change to the FAA’s BARR Program. BARR or “Block Aircraft Registration Request” allows owners of business jets to request to the FAA that their aircraft flight tracking data be blocked from public availability. The FAA is proposing to sharply curtail this program, running counter to the government’s role to protect privacy.

BARR Program

The proposed change surfaced on March 4, when the federal government published a notice in the Federal Register that the FAA has tentatively decided to scale back the BARR program, a move that would effectively limit the program’s privacy protection to only those with a known and specific security threat. Under this arrangement, broad security concerns would not be covered under the proposal.

The NBAA contends that by limiting BARR to only those with a known and specific security threat represents “an unwarranted invasion of the privacy of aircraft owners and operators, a threat to the competitiveness of U.S. companies and a potential security risk to persons on board.” To that end, the NBAA is requesting current BARR users and NBAA members to sign a petition on its website. The NBAA will submit the names of petition signers to the formal docket.

Security Concerns

As the law stands right now, private jet aircraft owners can block their tail numbers from being publicly tracked. By scaling back the BARR program, anyone with access to this data can track the whereabouts of a company’s CEO, perhaps putting him or her in grave danger. Moreover, when celebrities are being flown from point to point, an unwelcome assembly of paparazzi could be at their destination to greet them.

One argument the NBAA is using for keeping tail number information private is EZPass. Used widely in the northeast United States to electronically record toll payments on major highways, bridges and tunnels, information collected by EZPass is not available for public consumption. Also, commercial airlines and Amtrak are not allowed to publicize information about its passengers.

I Spy

One example of how businesses could use the scaled back program to its advantage would be to follow the travels of a competitor’s aircraft. If a mining CEO is enroute to a small town airport near an available for sale mineral mine, her competitors will know about it and could swoop in and counter the offer.

Of course, if you are an FBO operator, the proposed rules would let you know precisely when a jet will arrive, something that could help with staffing needs. Right now, movement of Executive Jet and Netjets aircraft is tracked on FlightAware, a flight tracking program available to commercial customers.

London will be overflowing with visitors and well wishers when the young couple commit themselves to each other, which means that finding a place to view the royal wedding and related festivities will take some work. We sought an insider’s help in finding places to watch the royal nuptials take place and our guest writer has come up with 10 places around the city and beyond where you might catch a glimpse of the happy, young couple.

1. Central London

Even if you haven’t got an invite to the actual ceremony, you can still be part of William and Kate’s big day by joining the crowds in the streets along the route between Westminster Cathedral and Buckingham Palace. Large screens are also likely to be set up in the Mall and Hyde Park. The route is likely to be packed, with people sleeping out overnight to secure the best spots.

2. St Andrews

This is the Scottish university town in northeast Fife where the couple first met, and there are plenty of bars, restaurants and guest houses in the town where you can both watch the wedding on TV and have a nice holiday at the same time. It is also a town full of history with plenty to see and do once the wedding is over.

3. Windsor

Windsor, to the west of London, has strong links to the Royal Family due to Windsor castle. This is also where Prince Charles married Camilla and Prince Edward married Sophie. It’s a popular place with tourists so get there early.

4. Clapham Common

Clapham Common in South London is set to become home to Camp Royale over the wedding weekend, where campers can watch the ceremony on giant screens surrounded by red white and blue bunting and plenty of Union Jack flags. There are even free cups of tea on offer every morning and as rates are for three nights, you can make the most of the Bank Holidays.

5. Anglesey

Kate and William have been living in a remote area of Anglesey in North Wales since William took up his position as a search and rescue helicopter pilot. Pubs in the local area will all be showing the wedding, so combine your viewing with a pint and a pub lunch.

6. Stanton Dingley, Berkshire

Stanton Dingley is close to Kate’s parents’ home in a rural area of West Berkshire, and the local pub called the Boot Inn has many connections with the family.

7. Edinburgh

Edinburgh is also proud of its royal connections, and will host William’s cousin Zara Philips’ wedding at the end of July. There are dozens of places up and down the historic Royal Mile which will be showing the ceremony.

8. Tetbury

Tetbury in Gloucestershire is near to Prince Charles’ country home at Highgrove, where William spent much of his childhood. This attractive small town is full of pretty buildings and pubs to watch the wedding.

9. Marlborough

Marlborough in Wiltshire is where Kate Middleton went to school. It’s an interesting market town, with plenty of shops to browse around if you get bored with the pomp and circumstance.

10. Dorset

William spent time at Bovington Camp in Dorset while he was in the Army and learning to drive a tank. If the wedding is on a nice day, you can combine your trip to see the wedding with an afternoon at the beach.

If you’re planning a stay in London, the city’s West End has much to offer from art galleries and museums to educational institutions, embassies and shopping. The West End also features London theater with many hotels offering ease of access to everything.

The following list of five hotels offer excellent accommodations including that all-important Wi-Fi access today’s travelers demand:

The Savoy

Established in 1889, this most legendary among London’s hotels is also one of the city’s historical landmarks. The Grill Room’s Master Chef Augustus Escoffier has concocted dishes in honor of hotel guests like Lily Langtry, Sarah Bernhardt and Edward VII. The debut performance of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue took place in its ballroom. Diva Luisa Tetrazzini was welcomed with her pet crocodile and entourage who resided in suites with a Thames view range from Claude Monet (who actually painted it) and Judy Garland (who requested blackout curtains). The sheer grandeur of the Savoy inspired dishwasher Guccio Gucci to return to Florence and found his luxury goods house. Indeed The Savory is steeped in history but thoroughly modern when it comes to technological facilities. Personal voicemail, fax, high-speed internet connections, and Wi-Fi are among its many assets.

The Ritz

The Ritz remains a perpetual mecca for aristocratic and political grandees. The “” is as much an institution as Her Majesty’s Buckingham Palace and its interiors are actually grander and better proportioned; to strengthen the argument, it was awarded the royal warrant by the Prince of Wales himself. The grand rococo dining room makes Versailles look low-key while the Palm Court is still the place to take tea, sip a Kir Royale and surf the net on your iPad using courtesy Wi-Fi for all hotel guests.

One Aldwych

One Aldwych is likely the most design- and gadget-conscious hotel in the West End. The hotel is a huge success and ideal to stay at if you appreciate things like fiber-optic reading lights, in-bathroom TVs, Wi-Fi, a screening room, and a pool that plays music underwater.

St. Martin’s Lane

Such is the fickleness of fashion that it’s become chic to label Ian Schrager’s St. Martin’s Lane as passé. This hasn’t stopped a slew of London hoteliers from copying the clever Philippe Starck interiors and the New York style snappy service. The glass 1960s era cubic structure is an architectural jewel, particularly striking when the multicolored light show in each guest room illuminates the night sky over the West End. Asia de Cuba, like the one at L.A.’s Mondrian Hotel, remains a fashion hangout as does the ambient Light Bar.

The Trafalgar

Formerly the offices of the Cunard cruise line, the Trafalgar exudes the slick, luxurious modernism of the Art Deco era. You will be hard pressed to find a better location in London for sightseeing. From the rooftop garden terrace you’re practically at eye level with Sir Nelson perched atop the Trafalgar Square column. Locals have adopted the hotel’s Rockwell Bar (specializing in Bourbon with over 100 brands) as a central hangout. The organic comfort food menu at Jago is a must and if that’s not enough, you can always retire to the convenience of Wi-Fi in your bedroom.
