Fabulous Day Trips In Northern England
By Ryan Embly
A great region to visit when you’re in the United Kingdom is that of Northern England. Northern England is just south of Scotland, and consists of the counties of Cheshire, Cumbria, Durham, East Riding of Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Merseyside, Northumberland, North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, Tyne and Wear, West Yorkshire and some of Lincolnshire. You can drive from one side of Northern England to the other in just a few hours, making this region a perfect place to take a day trip. Here are several suggestions for day trips in Northern England.
Hadrian’s Wall
This UNESCO World Heritage Site snakes through seventy-three miles of Northern England. The Emperor Hadrian ordered this wall to be built starting in the year 122, and long stretches of it are still intact even today. The wall isn’t the only thing there is to see – there are lots of Roman forts, castle, temples and archaeological sites near the wall as well. For the more athletic types, you can either follow the wall on foot by taking Hadrian’s Wall Path, or you can bicycle down National Cycle Route 72.
Lake District National Park
Located in the Lake District of the county of Cumbria, this national park is the largest in England. Widely considered to be one of the most beautiful places in the country, Lake District National Park is home to Windermere, the largest lake in England, and the highest mountains in England as well. The park offers many opportunities for visitors to hike, walk, bicycle and swim. There are also more extreme sports available such as mountain biking, climbing, kayaking, and kite surfing.
Liverpool
The popularity of the Beatles put Liverpool on the tourist map, but even before the average American knew of this city in the county of Merseyside, it was a wonderful place to visit. For the tourists who come to Liverpool on a Beatles’ pilgrimage, there are tours that take you all over the city and point out relevant locations and landmarks. You can also visit the childhood homes of the several of the Beatles as well as The Beatles Museum. If you’re Beatled out and would like to try something different, there are museums, ferries and parks to check out as well.
Durham
The city of Durham is located within the county of the same name. Durham is filled with historic buildings and bridges; many of them are on the official statutory list of buildings of special architectural or historic interest. The most well known buildings are the Durham Cathedral and the Durham Castle, both of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Both buildings were built nearly a thousand years ago and are in excellent condition. Be sure to check out the relics of St. Cuthbert and the Venerable Bebe at the Cathedral.
