What? No Relocation Offered?!

A few years back I was discussing with a cabin crew member her job prospects and learned that she had recently been offered a job in a distant city. That meant that she would need to either sell or rent out her townhouse, pack up all of her stuff and move.

Moving of any sort is a hassle, but your troubles are magnified when real estate property is involved. In times past, when a company hired you, they’d offer a relocation package which included home selling services and money to cover your move.

Today, lots of people are moving to take jobs far from home, but they’re doing so at their own expense. High unemployment, corporate cutbacks and a general “new” way of doing things has many people fending for themselves. Yes, the work (and expense) of selling your home rests squarely on your shoulders, that is if you can find a buyer in the first place.

The corporate flight attendant has long experienced this problem even when times were good. While cockpit crew were frequently offered relocation packages, cabin crew members were not. That’s a carry over habit from the airlines who customarily found flight attendants locally while pulling in pilots from all over the place.

Unfortunately, some businesses fail to grasp the difference between corporate and commercial flight attendants and the level of training, professionalism and experience corporate crewmembers bring to the table.

Relocation Packages

If the company who is hiring you has absolutely no relocation plan in place no matter whether you fly the jet, work the cabin or maintain the aircraft, then you know what you’re going to get…nada.

But, if your company is like one of those mentioned in the Nov. 27, 2007 issue of “The Wall Street Journal,” then you should qualify for assistance. That article noted some corporations have adjusted their relocation policies in light of the difficulty people are having in selling their homes, by absorbing some of the losses homeowners face in a down market.

With certain arrangements, you may still be responsible for selling your home, but if a buyer doesn’t step forward after a certain number of days have passed, your new employer may step in to buy your house.

Compensation Package

So what should you do if you need to relocate? Well, that point should be raised by the time the discussion turns to your compensation package. Your prospective employer may have a written policy in place, but they may bend those rules as needed. In any case, when it comes to getting special assistance you may need to ask in order to receive.
